This book is a highly revealing self- portrait of one of our most controversial and charismatic public figures. David Owen was born in Plymouth in 1938 and his relationship with the city, the sea and the West Country have been crucial factors in his life,as has been his boyhood in Wales. His interest in politics started after Cambridge University and while studying medicine at St Thomas's, London, where he worked as a neurologist and psychiatrist and researched the chemistry of the brain.David Owen recalls his time as a hospital doctor, first love,a broken engagement, marriage and the illness of a son. In the General Election of 1964 David Owen fought as Labour candidate for Torrington and in 1966 was elected MP for Plymouth Sutton. His first ministerial appointment was as Under-Secretary of State for the Royal Navy and he went on to become Health Minister and then Foreign Secretary at the remarkable age of thirty-seven.After the election defeat in 1979, David Owen fought within the Labour Party against unilateral nuclear disarmament, coming out of the EEC and for one member one vote. After the Limehouse Declaration in 1981,he was one of the Gang of Four that founded the SDP.The rise and fall of the SDP is chronicled with passion and commitment. As Leader of the SDP he clashed with Margaret Thatcher but also admired her.He gives a perceptive account of the politics of the 1980s,its achievements and its failures - from the Falklands War and the miner's strike to the poll tax and the eviction, after eleven and a half years,of Britain's first woman prime minister.David Owen's views on Britain in the 1990s and as an independent nation within Europe are strong and trenchant. This is a man whose energy and refusal to compromise have made him a catalyst of our times. Since April 2013 and again in March 2015, and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template, altering it's prices, weight allowances, dimensions and lowered it's qualifying compensation rates too!
